A jump start uses an external power source to turn the engine over when the battery no longer has enough charge to do it. Roūte sends a driver with jump equipment to the vehicle, shows you the estimate before dispatch, and tracks the driver in.
How a jump start works
A starter motor needs a large burst of current. When a battery is discharged it can still power a dome light or a door chime while being far too weak to crank the engine — which is why a car with visible dashboard lights can still be completely unable to start.
A jump start bridges that gap using a booster pack or a donor vehicle, giving the starter the current it needs. Once the engine is running the alternator takes over and begins recharging the battery as you drive.
A jump start is a recovery, not a repair. If the battery is at the end of its life, has an internal fault, or the charging system is failing, the vehicle will likely go flat again. Have the battery and alternator tested soon after — most auto parts retailers do this at no charge.
Emergencies come first. If there is a crash, injury, fire, or you are stopped somewhere unsafe in live traffic, call 911 before requesting roadside assistance.
Signs you need a jump start
- Turning the key produces a rapid clicking sound and no crank.
- The engine turns over slowly and unevenly before giving up.
- Interior lights and the dashboard are dim, flickering, or dead.
- The vehicle sat unused for several days or a light was left on overnight.

What to expect
Hybrid and EV limits
High-voltage traction batteries cannot be jump started. A 12V accessory battery in a hybrid sometimes can — provide accurate vehicle details so the request can be assessed.
Battery access matters
Some vehicles put the battery in the trunk or under a seat with remote jump terminals in the engine bay. The driver will locate the correct connection points.
Drive afterwards
Keep the engine running and drive for a stretch so the alternator can put charge back into the battery instead of switching off immediately.
Repeat failures need testing
If the car dies again shortly after, the battery or charging system likely needs replacement rather than another boost.
