How to confirm it is the battery

• Rapid clicking when you turn the key: classic low battery.
• Slow, laboured cranking that fades: low battery.
• Dim or flickering interior and dashboard lights: low battery.
• A single loud click with strong lights: more likely the starter.
• Cranks strongly but never fires: fuel, spark, or immobiliser, not the battery.
• Nothing at all, no lights: a dead battery, a bad connection, or a blown main fuse.

What to do right now

• Turn off the headlights, air conditioning, radio, and any chargers.
• Check the battery terminals are tight and not heavily corroded.
• Try once more — a rested battery sometimes finds one more crank.
• If it still will not start, get a jump start rather than repeatedly cranking, which drains it further.

After the jump start

Do not switch the engine off straight away. Drive for a decent stretch so the alternator can put charge back in — a two-minute idle in a parking space will not do it.

Then get the battery and charging system tested. Most auto parts retailers do this free. That test tells you whether you had a one-off drain or a battery at the end of its life.

Why batteries die in Florida

Heat is harder on batteries than cold. Sustained high temperatures accelerate the internal chemical wear that eventually stops a battery holding charge, which is why Central Florida batteries often have shorter working lives than the same battery elsewhere.

Short trips are the other common cause: a five-minute drive does not replace the charge used to start the engine, so the battery slowly drains over weeks of stop-start use.
